I love having easy black basics in my wardrobe to throw on when I'm short on time or creativity. Both these pants and this shirt are years old and get so much wear. The top I'll wear tucked in or loose like this, the sleeves down in colder weather and rolled for spring and early fall. The pants you know I adore and wear with everything from sequins and stilettos to casual sweaters and sneakers.
But basic black pieces can look pretty drab if they're not accessorized. The addition of a current style of bag, necklace, and sunglasses help. Does does makeup, which is also an accessory. Adding a deep wine lip adds glam and a current trend to old faithfuls from the closet. A dark wine lip is very on trend this season. This is ‘Bette' from NARS' Audacious lipstick line and it has been a favorite all fall. Not too goth, not too red, not too shiny, not too matte. It feels good on the lips, lasts, and wears well through the day. To make it last longer and not feather or bleed, I use a clear lip liner like Dior's. It really makes a difference, especially with a high pigment lipstick like this one.
Thank you Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. When you asked me to write about fall beauty trends it made me realize how much makeup I have that I have bought from Nordstrom. And right now's a great time to shop beauty at Nordstrom because they currently have over 80 different gifts with purchases taking place!

This fall I am loving all shades of red, especially the wine red colors seen at practically at every retailer. I saw this asymmetrical hem cashmere sweater at Chico’s and knew it would be a perfect wardrobe addition for fall and winter. Sweater | Pants | Shoes | Bag | Earrings Sweater: Black Label Cashmere…
The Nordstrom Fall Sale is here, and it’s a fantastic sale for winter must-haves – coats and boots. From wool walking coats to puffy parkas, the Nordstrom Fall Sale has an amazing variety of outerwear at amazing prices. Below I styled a few of the coats all with items from the sale to show you…
Can I tell you how excited I am that green seems to be hitting all the stores for fall? Bright emerald green is one of my favorite colors. It isn’t the best color against my face, but makes for an utterly awesome accent color. Green shoes, a green necklace, gosh how lovely would a green…
Okay, so today finally coworkers are noticing my hair change. Yesterday only one did and one said my hair cut was different but actually quarreled with me when I said the color was too (uh, wha?). Today one has noticed and mentioned the color change but most are mentioning the different bangs (they actually were…
Baby shower and Book Club. Teal dress from Proenza Schouler for Target collection. I went to Target on Friday to buy the last of the baby shower gift and saw this dress on sale for $20 and the last one there and nice enough to be a size Large. A good replacement from my kimono-style…
Last day of work before vacation! I have dry cleaning to pick up but have put off because I need the $ for the trip, and all my casual stuff is packed and ready to go so it’s slim pickings. Let’s add I spent the whole AM playing with my iPod… Navy linen blend camp…
Random question – what do you make of the adage that if you wore it the first time around you can’t wear it the second time? Chokers are BACK and I wore them to death in the 90s… too old to do it again?
I’m wearing chokers! I won’t be wearing any stretchy rubber gummy ones, and likely won’t be going full ’90s with a cameo or something hanging from it, but I say if you like it do it again. Rules are meant to be broken!
Hi Alison – ok, wacky question – for a nude lipliner, do you use it on the outer edges of your lips, or outside your lips entirely?? I have slight lip wrinkles that prohibit me from wearing dark red lipsticks, so I’m hoping something like this would help. Thank you!
Not a wacky question at all! I use it on the outer edges of my lips, staying on the actual lip itself. It helps fill in the the little wrinkles and acts as a barrier. You can also put over the whole lip to make lipstick last longer 🙂
Love your style.

Love the styling, including your lip color and nail polish. You know, I’m a huge fan of total black looks.

I love posts on how to re use what is already in my closet.
It makes sense to buy less and restyle what you have!

Do they still sell the Dior one? I saw a tester at Duty Free when I last went abroad but the guy said it had recently been discontinued!
Ignore me, just found it on their website!
Sweet!
